Miele appliances, and where the line falls

Miele arrives in Lexington kitchens as three quite different appliances — a dishwasher, a built-in coffee system, and increasingly a MasterCool refrigerator or freezer column — and each one fails in its own way.

Scope, stated plainly

The book here is Sub-Zero refrigeration and only that. Miele service is not taken. These notes come from working alongside the appliances rather than on them, and they are written to save you a wasted call rather than to win one.

  1. The dishwasher

Miele dishwashers have a deserved reputation and they fail predictably: drainage first, then door seals, then the electronics. A machine that stops with water in the base is almost always a drain restriction — the filter, the pump impeller or the waste connection under the sink — long before it is a failed pump. A machine that runs and leaves crockery dirty is usually a spray-arm or water-supply problem rather than a program fault.

  2. The coffee system

Built-in coffee machines live and die by water. Scale in the boiler and in the flow path accounts for most complaints, and the machine's own descale routine, run to completion, resolves more of them than any part ever will. A plumbed machine adds supply pressure to the list of variables; a tank machine adds the tank sensor.

  3. The refrigeration

MasterCool columns sit in the same kind of joinery run as a Sub-Zero column and suffer the same environmental fault: a condenser starved of air behind a decorative panel. The internal architecture differs, though, and so does the electronic control, which is exactly why this bench does not take them. A refrigeration technician who does not know a platform is a refrigeration technician guessing.

What this bench does take, in the same kitchen, is the Sub-Zero: built-in refrigerators and freezers, drawer units, ice machines and wine cabinets.

From Sub-Zero calls in Miele kitchens

4.9 out of 5 from 1102 reviews

  • February cold and the freezer drawer would not close flush. Ice had built up on the rear track from a blocked drain. Cleared, glides cleaned, drawer sits square again. In and out in about ninety minutes.

    Clifford J. · Arlington Heights

  • Interior lighting flickered for a week and then went dark. Loose ribbon connector behind the trim, not the strip that two other companies wanted to sell me. Reseated and secured, and no charge for a part.

    Arturo M. · Belmont

  • The ice maker inside our column stopped producing anything at all. Its fill tube had frozen solid because the flap heater was dead. Both replaced, and he showed me how to check the arm position myself.

    Trudy W. · Belmont
